Even though Andriy Lunin has been a Real Madrid player for almost six years, the goalkeeper is finally enjoying his breakthrough season at the club.
With Thibaut Courtois suffering a twin injury blow and Kepa Arrizabalaga not entirely convincing, Lunin has capitalised on his opportunity and established himself as the preferred option between the sticks.
So much so that Real Madrid are already preparing a new contract offer with improved wages for the 25-year-old, considering his current deal expires in 2025.
The Spanish capital club want to keep hold of the Ukrainian international but at the same time they will not stand in his way if he wants to leave, reports AS.
Real Madrid looking for replacements in secret
The report mentions that given Lunin’s performances for the club and the Ukrainian national team of late, Real Madrid believe they can get a good sum for him if he wants to leave in the summer.
As such, Los Blancos are already looking for a replacement for Lunin in a discreet manner, in case he decides to leave, as they wish to be prepared for all scenarios.
It is claimed that Real Madrid have looked at several goalkeeping options who fit the profile similar to the one that Lunin had when he was signed in 2018 – young, cheap, and with the potential to grow into a first-team player.
As mentioned earlier, the preference would be for Lunin to stay as there is no certainty about the form that Courtois will return in after such a lengthy injury layoff.
The Real Madrid coaching staff and the management believe that the Ukrainian has huge potential, which is why they are pushing for his renewal.
But in case Lunin opts to move on in search of a better opportunity, the club do not wish to be left exposed and are hence keeping tabs on several possible options.
The ball is now in the 25-year-old ace’s court and it will be up to him to decide whether he renews or leaves
