Real Madrid were aiming to make a statement signing following Karim Benzema’s departure in the summer of 2022.
Most people anticipated that superstar to be a striker, but Madrid declined to go further into their budget after buying Jude Bellingham for €100 million in the same window.
And, although Madrid does not have the same financial troubles as Barcelona, Florentino Perez is picking his fights wisely, particularly with all of the money spent on rebuilding the Santiago Bernabeu.
As a result, Madrid wants to sell players before acquiring replacements, and they are particularly worried about numerous spots in defense, particularly fullbacks.
Los Blancos now have 31-year-old Daniel Carvajal starting at right-back, with 33-year-old Lucas Vazquez filling in. Nacho, 33, has also covered those roles but is set to be playing his last season with the Spanish capital club.
While aging is a worry, Madrid is unconcerned about any of their performances, with the exception of a certain Ferland Mendy. The Frenchman has been picking up ailments and underperforming to the point that the team wants to get rid of him right now.
According to Mario Cortegana (h/t MadridXtra), Madrid will attempt to trade Mendy next summer.
Alphonso Davies is the intended recipient.
While Fran Garcia has done an excellent job at left-back after re-signing for his childhood club this season, assisting three goals in 10 games, Madrid seem to have made a point of recruiting Alphonso Davies in the summer.
The Bayern Munich star’s contract expires in 2025, and he does not seem eager to renew at the Allianz Arena. In the summer of 2024, he might be offered for a reduced price.
Meanwhile, Garcia is anticipated to serve as his deputy if the move is approved.
Who cares about Mendy?
Unfortunately for Real Madrid, not many teams are interested in signing Mendy. Over the summer, there was some interest from Saudi Arabia, but no deal was reached.
Meanwhile, Carlo Ancelotti has complete trust in the 28-year-old, as shown by his inclusion in the starting lineup whenever he is available.
