Earlier today, former Real Madrid defender Pepe announced his retirement from the game of football at the age of 41.
The iconic centre-back hung up his boots after enjoying a solid season at the club level with FC Porto which was followed by him representing the Portugal national team for one last time at the UEFA Euro 2024.
An icon at Real Madrid, Pepe spent ten years at the Spanish capital club between 2007 and 2017, winning every possible trophy, including three La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League.
Pepe made 334 appearances for Real Madrid in total, wrapping up with 14 titles and trophies before leaving in 2017.
Real Madrid’s message to Pepe
Following the announcement of his retirement, Real Madrid posted a tribute message to the former defender who gave his best years to the club.
“Following Pepe’s announcement of his retirement from professional football, Real Madrid. would like to show its gratitude, affection and admiration for one of the great legends of our club and of world football,” the statement from the club read.
“Pepe was one of the best defenders at Real Madrid and in European football, and he will always have the recognition and affection of all Real Madrid fans. Real Madrid wishes him and his family the best of luck in this new stage of his life.”
Pepe remembers Real Madrid
The legendary defender posted a farewell video reminiscing some of the greatest moments of his illustrious career and had great things to say about his time at Real Madrid while watching the footage.
“It was special to spend ten years at the biggest club in the world. The first day I stepped in Madrid, I was so happy. After ten years I left with my head held high, I always gave everything to Real Madrid,” he said.
“What I will never forget in my ten years there is the affection from the fans. It’s a great emotion when the stadium shouts your name. The titles, the matches, the stadium, the club…, Real Madrid will forever stay in my heart,” Pepe added.
