Due to the fact that the Court of Justice of the European Union has issued a ruling that is contrary to the positions taken by FIFA and UEFA on the Super League, today is a notable day in the world of European football.
The football regulatory authorities, who threatened to impose significant punishments on the clubs that were participating in the proposal, were able to prevent the renegade league from being established in 2021.
Because of this, every team, with the exception of Real Madrid and Barcelona, decided to withdraw from the initiative. However, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) verdict that gave permission for the Super League to proceed has given rise to fresh optimism that the tournament would be successful.
Bernd Reichart, the Chief Executive Officer of A22 Sports Management, the organization that is providing financial support to the Super League, has already expressed his satisfaction with the ruling on social media.
The president of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez, has now published a statement about the case. In it, he expresses his satisfaction with the decision made by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) and asserts that it is a momentous occasion in the annals of football and sports in general.
As stated by Perez in a statement released by the Real Madrid organization, “We at Real Madrid welcome with great satisfaction the decision taken by the Court of Justice of the European Union, which is responsible for guaranteeing our principles, values, and freedoms.”
The right, reason, and freedom have triumphed today in spite of the forces that we have been subjected to for more than two years now. Real Madrid will continue to fight for the betterment of football because of this same reason.
According to Perez, who expressed opinions that were similar to those expressed by Reichart, “First and foremost, that European club football is not and will never again be a monopoly monopoly.” Second, that from today, the clubs will be the ones in charge of determining their own fate.
“In a nutshell, soccer and its supporters have also triumphed today, as well as the Europe of freedoms, which has once again triumphed,”
Perez made a commitment to construct a project that is “fully compatible with national competitions, open to all, based on sporting merit, and which will effectively impose respect for financial fair play.” This was in response to the fact that the Super League had garnered the angry attention of supporters owing to the fact that it was a closed league.
When asked about the future of the initiative, the president of Real Madrid continued, “I am calling on all European clubs to come together and have constructive discussions.”
Permit me to express to the European clubs that we are at the beginning of a new period in which we are able to work in freedom, in constructive communication, without threats, without acting against anything or anybody, and with the intention of inventing and modernizing football in order to continue to feed the enthusiasm of the fans.
In his concluding remarks, Perez remarked, “Starting today, the clubs, players, and fans of European football are finally in control of the present and the future of the sport.”
It is on this day that we shall mark both a before and an after. For the history of football, as well as the history of sports in general, today is a very momentous day.
