The ongoing season was largely expected to be Luka Modric’s final season at Real Madrid. After all, a renewal at 38 years of age appeared close to impossible.
Yet, it has been a summer of unpredictable moves. This past month, Toni Kroos announced his retirement from football at the end of the season in what came as an unexpected move and Luka Modric now appears close to staying at the club for another season.
Renewal signed
As revealed by Gianluca Di Marzio in a recent report, Modric has already signed his renewal with Real Madrid this week.
The new contract will see him at the club for one more year and will astonishingly see him in the team at the ripe age of 39.
An official announcement of the same is expected as early as next week and has likely been delayed only in view of the UEFA Champions League finale later today.
Needless to say, this comes as some positive news for the Merengues’ faithful after the devastating decision from Kroos earlier this month.
Losing both veterans in the same summer would undoubtedly have been a traumatising blow.
Retirement at Madrid?
With Real Madrid largely considered the pinnacle of football, it is not surprising that players see it fitting to call it time on their careers while representing Los Blancos. After all, there is no better way of leaving than at the highest level.
Toni Kroos opted for the same approach through his recent decision, while even Carlo Ancelotti has said that he would like to finish his managerial career at the Spanish capital.
It now appears that Modric will likely walk down the same road.
The Croatian star has no dearth of offers on his table, ranging from Saudi Arabia and the USA to his home country.
His renewal, however, is a clear sign that the player could likely bid adieu to the sport after another season in white, especially given that he has embraced a smaller role in the team graciously.
