Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde has admitted that he has entered a new phase of his professional career. Valverde is stepping into a crucial role as he prepares for the upcoming South American Qualifiers with Uruguay.
As the captain of the national team, the midfielder is embracing his new responsibilities at a time when he is also experiencing a significant shift in his career at Real Madrid, following the retirement of Toni Kroos.
Speaking to the South American press upon his arrival in his home country, Valverde shared his thoughts ahead of Uruguay’s matches against Paraguay at home and Venezuela away.
The midfielder reflected on the changes he has faced at Real Madrid since Kroos hung up his boots.
With expectations high for Valverde to step into the shoes of his former teammate, he has made notable changes this season, including switching to the number ‘8’ shirt and dyeing his hair platinum.
Valverde expressed his satisfaction with his current situation, saying, “I arrived with a lot of desire, happy with how things are going for me.
“This new moment with another number, another feeling… Happy that things are going well,” he noted as quoted by AS.
More responsibilities in the national team
Valverde, who now leads the Uruguayan national team, also took a moment to discuss Luis Suarez’s recent announcement that he will retire from international football after the home game against Paraguay.
Valverde emphasised the importance of respecting Suárez’s decision, stating, “We have to respect his choice and thank him for all the years he dedicated to us young players, for his guidance, and for the values he instilled. He deserves to retire in the best way possible.”
Having played alongside Suarez for several years with the national team, and even facing him as an opponent on the pitch, Valverde acknowledged the impact of Suarez’s presence. Before they became teammates, Valverde saw Suarez as an “unattainable” figure.
However, he noted that the forward has always been a supportive presence in the dressing room, even during his recent period with a less prominent role in the squad.
Valverde’s words show a deep appreciation for Suarez, highlighting the positive influence he has had on the team both on and off the field.
