Talks of Germany recalling Toni Kroos for the upcoming Euros has been going around for a while now. The Real Madrid star announced his retirement from international football in July 2021, but it is not ruled out that he will return for one last dance for the Germany-based tournament.
The player, however, is reluctant to return to the national setup. He does not wish to interfere with the playing time of up-and-coming players and more importantly, wishes to focus on club objectives.
Notably, the German National Team is currently at one of its lowest points in recent history. They have lost six of their last ten matches across competitions and are far from favourites for the upcoming Euros.
Speaking to the media recently, former Germany star Stefan Effenberg gave his two cents on Kroos’ potential return to the German National Team, its pros and cons. He began by addressing what the midfield legend would bring to the table from a sporting perspective.
“Kroos return? From a sporting point of view, it would undoubtedly help the team immediately and provide it with stability. He has been performing at a very high level for years and continues to do so at Real Madrid.”
However, the German legend went on to advise Kroos not to return to the National Team and elaborated on why he felt so.
“However, things are not going well for Germany and a return could ruin a little of what he has achieved with the national team.”
“If you miss a tournament like this at an advanced age, it may give you one or even two more seasons in your club,” he added on the other benefits Kroos could reap.
