Real Madrid are arguably the biggest club in world football. So, it is not surprising that they are always being linked with some of the very best players from top clubs all around Europe. On paper, they already have what is close to being the super team in Europe. However, at Santiago Bernabeu, the aim is to always be one step better.
Real Madrid already have two of Europe’s best goalkeepers in their ranks. Thibaut Courtois is finally back to full fitness after spending the majority of last season out of action. On the other hand, Andriy Lunin surprised everyone by signing a long-term extension with the club recently.
Yet, it looks like Real Madrid have another high-profile goalkeeper on their radar as well. And his future at AC Milan is up in the air.
As reported by TEAMtalk, Real Madrid have returned to show a concrete interest in Mike Maignan. Last spring, they asked for information about the AC Milan goalkeeper’s possible transfer after Courtois’ injury. Now, the Spanish and European champions have asked for updated conditions for the Frenchman whose contract expires in 2026.
Real Madrid interested in one of Europe’s best goalkeepers
So, it looks like Real Madrid have revisited their interest in the AC Milan goalkeeper. Maignan is out of contract in 2026 and is currently believed to be at a crossroads in extension talks with the Italian club.
Maignan has been fantastic in goal for AC Milan since his arrival from Lille in 2021. The Frenchman was one of the key pieces in the club’s 2021/22 Serie A-winning campaign with a number of key performances against the likes of Juventus and Inter Milan.
The Italian club are hoping to extend his deal. However, contract talks seem to have stalled over wage demands. It has been suggested that Maignan wants €7/8 million per season, which is more than what Rafael Leao earns, and considered too high by AC Milan, who are currently willing to offer a figure of around €5/5.5 million per year.
