Since leaving Real Madrid for Girona in the summer of 2022, Miguel Gutierrez has grown leaps and bounds, establishing himself as one of the most promising left-backs in La Liga.
The 22-year-old former Los Blancos academy product has been a prominent figure in Michel’s side this season as they make a surprise push for the La Liga title.
Naturally, there has been a lot of interest coming towards the Spaniard’s way, owing to his performances, with both Girona and Real Madrid keeping a close eye on the developments surrounding his future.
Real Madrid have an affordable buyback option
According to a report from MARCA, Real Madrid have an option to buy Gutierrez back from Girona in the summer of 2024 for a fee of €8 million. That price will rise to €10 million a year later.
In addition, Los Blancos also have the first refusal option on Gutierrez should any club make an offer for him in January, while they also retain 50% of his rights, meaning they would receive half of any fee that Girona sell him for if the Merengues opt not to re-sign him.
As things stand, Girona have no plans of selling Gutierrez in January nor does the player wish to leave as he wishes to complete the season in Catalonia and continue to be a part of the special season that they are having.
However, as things stand, it appears unlikely that the left-back will continue at Girona beyond the summer of 2024.
Destination Premier League?
As mentioned earlier, Real Madrid would have an option to sign Gutierrez from Girona for €8 million next summer.
But at the moment, it is something that is not a part of the Merengues’ plans as they have Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia, and are vying to sign Alphonso Davies.
Things could certainly change between now and the end of the season, but a move to the Premier League appears more likely for Gutierrez.
A number of top clubs from England are understood to be interested in the 22-year-old, with Arsenal said to be in the pole position, as per the report.
It is also claimed that the possibility of Real Madrid re-signing Gutierrez in the summer and then selling him right away does not exist.
If he is brought back, the club would have to keep him or loan him again for a season before selling him – a scenario that is seen as unviable.
