Before the new season got off to a start, Nacho Fernandez was one of the players facing an uncertain future at Real Madrid.
There were doubts on whether or not the veteran defender would enjoy a prominent role in the first team, especially with Carlo Ancelotti putting more faith in Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba, and Eder Militao.
But as we approach the halfway point of the campaign, Nacho has been a crucial figure in Real Madrid, at a time when Militao and Alaba have been sidelined with long-term injuries.
Nacho, who was even considering an exit in the summer, is now the captain of the Real Madrid team, leading to renewed hopes of his continuity at Santiago Bernabeu.
Contract extension on the cards
According to Hugo Cerezo (h/t Madrid Xtra), it is not completely ruled out that Nacho may continue at Real Madrid until 2025.
The veteran defender’s current deal at the Bernabeu expires at the end of the season. But given his importance in the team, Madrid would want him to renew for another season.
Nacho, in fact, has the new contract on the table, which will allow him to automatically renew his contract until 2025.
There is no secret that Nacho, for his part, is considering a contract renewal. The report adds that the captaincy opportunity could play a key role in convincing him to further his stay at the Bernabeu.
However, it must be noted that Real Madrid may go after a big-name defender in the near future. The club are already keeping tabs on many options in the transfer market.
One of the top targets for Los Blancos is LOSC Lille’s Leny Yoro, though the club are also keeping an eye on other talents across Europe.
The potential arrival of a new defender could once again take things back to square one for Nacho. It will, therefore, be interesting to see whether or not the veteran ends up renewing his deal.
