Marcelo departed his beloved Real Madrid for Olympiacos on a free transfer a year and a half ago.
However, following a brief stint in Greece, the left-back returned to his native Brazil early this year, joining his childhood club Fluminense.
As the year comes to a close, Marcelo has now played in 26 competitive matches for Fluminense since his comeback.
Marcelo has won the Libertadores Cup.
Marcelo’s return to Fluminense has been very fruitful, as he has just added the Copa Libertadores to his trophy collection.
Fluminense were named Copa Libertadores winners this year, defeating Argentine powerhouse BOCA Juniors in the final.
Marcelo was instrumental in their victory, appearing in eight games and proving a vital outlet in the left-back position.
Marcelo’s experience, along with his offensive flair on the left wing, aided Fluminense’s victories against Olimpia, Internacional, and Argentinos Jr.
“More important than UCL”
Marcelo declared the Copa Libertadores championship to be more significant than the UEFA Champions League crowns shortly after winning it.
“Real Madrid will understand that this is my most important club title.””I was raised by the club,” Marcelo said (via Diario AS).”Real Madrid lives in my heart, but it is even difficult to talk about Fluminense.”
Marcelo’s remarks are unsurprising given his family’s affinity for Fluminense. His grandpa was a major admirer of the club, therefore he started his childhood career there.
Marcelo has never won a South American club football title before. The fact that it was the Copa Libertadores added to the significance for the experienced left-back, who has won several titles during his tenure at Real Madrid.
