At Real Madrid, Ferland Mendy has not had an easy time, particularly in the last couple of years, when he has been plagued by one injury after another. This has made his situation at Real Madrid difficult.
In spite of this, the Frenchman, who is 28 years old, continues to have the faith of manager Carlo Ancelotti, who recently referred to him as the “best defensive left-back in the world.”
On the other hand, Mendy’s contract with Real Madrid is set to expire in 2025, and the former Olympian Lyon star has not yet been given an extension of his obligations with the club.
This, in conjunction with the Merengues’ pursuit of Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich, has led to skepticism over Mendy’s ability to continue playing at the Santiago Bernabeu since the beginning of the season.
As a potential player, Mendy has been considered by Chelsea.
In the middle of this, writer Simon Phillips asserts that Chelsea has reportedly addressed the prospect of acquiring Ferland Mendy from Real Madrid as an alternative for the month of January during some internal discussions.
The Blues have been experiencing a lot of difficulty at the left-back position due to the fact that both Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella have been dealing with severe injuries.
Since Mauricio Pochettino did not like Ian Maatsen, he has been loaned out to Borussia Dortmund. Borussia Dortmund is now playing for the club.
Because of the circumstances, Chelsea has been forced to deploy Levi Colwill as a makeshift left defender. The club hopes to be able to move on from this dilemma by acquiring a player who is more naturally suited to play the position.
Several names have been considered as potential options, one of whom happens to be Real Madrid’s Mendy.
January exit unlikely
While Chelsea might be looking at Mendy as an option, it is extremely unlikely that Real Madrid would let him depart midway through the season.
As mentioned earlier, the 28-year-old, whose market value stands at €20 million, is a player that manager Ancelotti trusts immensely.
Furthermore, Fran Garcia has not convinced totally since returning to the Bernabeu in the summer and as such Real Madrid would not want to sell Mendy, at least until the summer, when they hope to sign Davies from Bayern.
