Real Madrid has been extensively connected with Kylian Mbappe in recent years. They lost out on signing him in 2022 when he chose to sign a contract extension with Paris Saint-Germain, but it now seems clearer than ever that he will go to the Spanish capital next summer, when his current contract ends.
Real Madrid has been keeping a close eye on Mbappe’s status in recent months, but they cannot make a formal move until six months before the 24-year-old’s contract ends, which would be at the end of December. On Saturday, they sought to dispel reports that they were already in negotiations with Mbappe about a transfer, citing respect for PSG.
Mbappe seems to be heading to Real Madrid, albeit the same could have been said at this time two years ago, when he turned down Los Blancos. Club executives are fully aware of this potential, which is why backup plans have been developed, with one apparently standing out above the others.
Real Madrid are interested in acquiring Jamal Musiala, who almost missed out to Jude Bellingham in the fight for the Kopa Trophy, which was handed earlier this week, according to Bild (via Fichajes). According to the source, the club has been secretly working on the potential of signing Musiala for some time, and they may have a serious chance of concluding the deal.
First and foremost, Musiala is without a doubt one of the top young players in the world. He has been outstanding for Bayern Munich in recent years, and he would be a wonderful signing for Real Madrid.
However, there are others who question if Musiala is genuinely required by Real Madrid. For starters, he should not be considered a “Plan B” to Mbappe, since they are two distinct players who play in two distinct positions. Musiala is a nice addition on his own, but he’s not comparable to Mbappe.
Furthermore, Musiala’s job is similar to what Bellingham presently performs in Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid system. Unless Bellingham is moved back into a deeper midfield position, the Englishman will not be replaced for playing the “10” role, making it impossible for him and Musiala to play together.
If Real Madrid does not sign Mbappe, they must look for a top-tier “9”. It would be fantastic if they could sign both this and Musiala. However, it seems doubtful, so signing Musiala next summer may not be the wisest decision.
Musial would be a terrific signing, albeit not quite required. He’s not a very good Mbappe substitute.
