According to a report that was published in the Spanish publication AS, left back Ferland Mendy, who is 28 years old, has been given the go-ahead to play in Real Madrid’s upcoming home game against Union Berlin in the UEFA Champions League. This match will take place on October 2.
However, the report also adds that even though he will be with the squad tomorrow, Carlo Ancelotti will start Fran Garcia as the left back against the German team. Garcia will be the first choice for Ancelotti.
Mendy has completed one week of intense physical preparation.
According to the publication, Mendy has spent the whole week participating in the group’s workouts. In point of fact, the Frenchman was available for selection even against Real Sociedad; however, he was not deemed to be at his peak level of physical readiness for the game.
The player was not included in the gameday squad at all because the coaching staff did not want to take any chances with him and did not want to risk anything.
However, as of today, the medical staff has given the Frenchman the all-clear to play, but it is extremely unlikely that he will be included in the starting XI for the match.
Why did you choose Garcia over Mendy?
The answer to this question is as straightforward as looking at recent performance and the competitive rhythm. The 24-year-old has started all five of Real Madrid’s league games so far this season, and manager Carlo Ancelotti is unlikely to interrupt his rhythm.
In the first place, the player is coming off a performance against Sociedad in which he had two assists, and a performance of a similar magnitude is anticipated from him this time around as well.
However, despite the fact that he has Real Madrid’s team record for most assists in the league this season, the player still has some shortcomings.
During the match against Sociedad, there were times when it appeared as though he was merely Takefusa Kubo’s puppet.
Garcia was simply unable to keep up with the dizzying speed and deception of the Japanese, but he did manage to reduce the severity of the danger in the second period.
But considering Mendy’s history of injuries and the fact that he hasn’t played much recently, it makes sense for Ancelotti to stick with Garcia for tomorrow’s game.
