In spite of the broad opposition, the European Super League, which is supported by Real Madrid and Barcelona, is continuing to battle on. The verdict that the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) handed down against UEFA and FIFA last month is a helping hand.
Now, preparations are already being made for the tournament, which will have a redesigned format, and it would seem that a potential start date has been determined upon for the Super League as well.
At the beginning of this year, the Super League has reportedly increased the amount of time it spends in discussions with European teams, and the tournament is scheduled to start in September of 2025, according to AS.
In addition, the Super League asserts that it already has “twenty teams very motivated and another thirty almost convinced; we could start tomorrow,” as stated by the secretary general Anas Laghrari in remarks that were made to Ouest France.
“The objective is to start the new competition in September 2025, and to do so with the best teams in Europe and also with English clubs,” according to people inside the initiative who are connected to the project.
As an additional point of information, the sources informed AS that there are clubs who are openly opposed to the Super League but are secretly interested in attending.
“There are clubs that have privately signed up to the project who have publicly opposed it,” they explain. “There are clubs that have done both.”
UEFA’s contention that the Super League would be a tournament for a select few is refuted by the new competition, which asserts that “the project has been modified and is open, fair, and participatory.”
