Real Madrid centre-back Joan Martinez has undergone knee surgery today, as reported by journalist Mario Cortegana in The Athletic.
The operation was performed by Manuel Leyes, the same specialist who previously operated on Real Madrid stars Thibaut Courtois and Eder Militao.
The outlet mentions that Martinez is expected to return home later today to begin his recovery process and the club has planned for him to complete his rehabilitation with Arbeloa’s Juvenil A team, a youth squad within Real Madrid’s academy system.
It must be noted that The 17-year-old defender sustained his ACL injury during a training session while with Real Madrid’s first team.
He had been included in the squad for the pre-season tour of the United States, where he participated in matches against AC Milan and Barcelona.
Despite his young age, Martinez made a strong impression during the tour, displaying solid performances and earning praise for his potential and composure on the field.
No timeline for return
At this point, it is not yet clear how long Martinez will be sidelined. The team’s medical staff will continue to assess his condition as he begins his rehabilitation. Given his current situation, the timeline for his return to the pitch remains uncertain.
Martinez was expected to have a significant role in the first team this season, especially following the departure of veteran defender Nacho and the club’s failure to sign Leny Yoro.
Martinez’s impressive performances in the pre-season had positioned him as a strong candidate for more first-team opportunities, but his injury has now put those plans on hold.
Despite this setback, the young defender remains under contract with Real Madrid until 2026, highlighting the club’s confidence in his future.
In his absence, Jacobo Ramon, another highly regarded young centre-back from Real Madrid’s youth academy, has been called up to fill his spot.
The club remains hopeful that Martinez will make a full recovery and return stronger, continuing his development into a key player in the future.
