Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes in the club’s current attackers but admits that the Gunners have failed in front of goal this season.
Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus were both chastised following disappointing performances in the recent north London derby stalemate with Tottenham Hotspur, with top scorer Bukayo Saka finally coming through once again.
Nketiah has two goals this season, but regular starter Jesus has just one, and Arteta admits his team hasn’t been at their best this season.
“There’s various ways to score goals and we are scoring goals,” he said. “But we should have scored many more with the chances we have created.”
90min hears that Arsenal are ready to acquiring a new striker to bolster their Premier League championship challenge. The Gunners are among the clubs interested in Brentford’s Ivan Toney, who is also wanted by Chelsea.
Arsenal officials have also been watching Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez this season following his strong start to the Eredivisie season.
Arteta, on the other hand, tried his utmost to support Jesus and Nketiah and emphasized that a fresh signing is not presently being considered.
“We’re not thinking about it at all,” Arteta said. “We have a lot of talent up front.” True, we have some injuries right now. We’ll stick with the guys we have.”
When asked whether the concept of a classic striker was dying away in football, Arteta cited Toney as evidence that pure goal scorers may still flourish in the current game.
“It’s coming back,” Arteta said. “When you look at Harry Kane, [Erling] Halaand, Ivan Toney, and [Aleksandar] Mitrovic, there are a few players.” You have guys that score a lot of goals as examples.”
