Real Madrid are about to face Union Berlin in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League for the first time this season, and the defender for Union Berlin, Robin Gosens, has given a warning to the Merengues ahead of that matchup.
Union Berlin are making their very first appearance in the Champions League in the club’s entire existence. They could not have asked for a finer opponent or site for their Champions League debut as they will be facing Real Madrid at the illustrious Santiago Bernabeu.
Los Blancos are the clear favorites to win the game and walk away with three points due to the David vs. Goliath aspect of the competition.
But Gosens, who joined with Union Berlin this past summer, has cautioned that they will not come to the Bernabeu to be just bystanders and that they would be going for it against Real Madrid. Real Madrid is the team that they will be playing.
As reported by MARCA, he was quoted as saying, “We are not going as spectators. We are not going to admire the stadium or be amazed by anything else in the area.” That’s something we can take care of after the game. We are going to compete with other teams.”
Real Madrid, who also face Napoli and SC Braga in the same group, will not take any of their opponents lightly since they are competing in the same pool as Union Berlin.
As a matter of fact, David Alaba has previously confessed that overcoming Union Berlin would not be an easy task. This is because he competed against them in the past when he was still playing for Bayern Munich.
They have had some very remarkable years, and as a result, they have earned a spot in the Champions League. They have improved their roster for the next season by adding some well-known players. I am familiar with the difficulty of these matches since I have competed against Union when playing for Bayern,” he said.
However, before Real Madrid can shift their attention to the Champions League, they have a difficult obstacle in La Liga to deal with, as Real Sociedad will be paying them a visit tomorrow.
